Muchisimo menos spam durante esta semana

Veniamos observando como de forma paulatina se iba reduciendo el numero de emails a procesar por el sistema antispam y por ende el número de spams que nuestros clientes recibían. Ayer fue un día que marcará historia por el nivel miiiiinimo que llegamos –de otras épocas vamos. Hoy veo esta noticia en CruchGear, lo cual, unido a otras noticias del mercado español de esta misma semana(isps en listas negras, datacenter que no funcionan), nos hacen respirar un poco más tranquilos, aunque no sabemos hasta cuando.
Al parecer el responsable de 2/3 de spam del mercado americano (y yo creo que global) le han chapado el garito.

A group of Internet providers have essentially shut down California hosting service, McColo, yesterday and total spam production dropped considerably. The provider, notorious for their low-down ways, was producing 2/3 of the spam in the U.S. Other providers saw a drop from about 40 spam messages per second to 10 per second - a major victory for those whose m3mb3rz are already rock solid.

Tens of millions of people rely on Gmail, and some even pay for the “premier” edition through Google Apps for Enterprises (which boasts one million businesses as customers). So when some enterprise customers had to suffer through a Gmail outage two weeks ago that lasted 30 hours, it made some headlines. As did the bigger Gmail outage last August that affected all users for about two hours.

In a belated blog post that responds to the criticism generated by the most recent outage, Matthew Glotzbach, the product management director of Google Enterprise, says that only “0.003% of Google Apps Premier Edition users” were affected. He also claims that Gmail is available 99.9 percent of the time, measured by “average uptime per user based on server-side error rates.” That amounts to 10 to 15 minutes of downtime per month, including the August outage.

As it so happens, the enterprise version of Gmail comes with a 99.9 percent uptime guarantee. Today, Google is extending that guarantee for enterprise customers to Google Calendar, Google Docs, Google Sites, and Google Talk.

When an essential service goes down in the cloud, everybody notices, but Glotzbach contends that Google’s cloud services are more reliable than competing services run in a corporate data center. To prove his point, he trots out reliability data for enterprise email software from Microsoft, Novell, and IBM, and cm[ares it to Gmail. The results are in the nice chart reproduced above (blue is unplanned outages, red is planned outages):

Looking just at the unplanned outages that catch IT staffs by surprise, these results suggest Gmail is twice as reliable as a Novell GroupWise solution, and four times more reliable than a Microsoft Exchange-based solution that companies must maintain themselves.

There you have it. Gmail is four times as reliable as Microsoft Exchange. So stop yer complainin’.

Note that this data comes from the Radicati Group. I’m sure Microsoft could drum up some countervailing data showing different results.

Do you think apps in the cloud are more reliable than data-center apps? On average, maybe. Apps in the cloud, though, need to be held to a higher standard. 99.9 percent reliability is nice. But that is not even phone-company reliable. Get back to us when you get to 99.999 percent. Otherwise, we are just going to run this image every time Gmail fails:

Actualización: Me han contestado. Me han enviado la composición, y aunque no me convence, pues me conformo.

Aunque podría parecer un tópico, los servicios de atención al cliente no funcionan bien. No funcionan. Y no es tópico, es realidad. Hay miles de posts en internet sobre el tema que si patatín y patatán. Nunca me suele afectar, aunque suelo reclamar y poner denuncias o cartas a la OMIC de turno, que luego sinceramente no valen para nada. En este caso, me afecta un poco más, y por eso, pues lo comento, a ver si tengo suerte y alguien me contesta, porque como me ha afectado el no saberlo espero que si a alguien le ocurre no le afecte.

Solo pido que me contesten diciendo cual es la composición de la lecitina que utilizan en sus galletas María marca blanca de marca El Corte Inglés. El porqué, pues el porqué a la vuelta de la publicidad, cuando me contesten.

Por cierto, escribí el 11 de septiembre a las 11:13, el 13 de septiembre a las 11:23 y el 15 de septiembre a las 13:44.

Nuestro servidor contactó con éxito con su servidor y el mensaje fue entregado.

Hola,

Me pasa Guillermo un enlace espectacular. Espectacular en cuanto a diseño y la grandísima y original idea. Al parecer, no tengo ni idea de si será verdad o no, de un pueblo de sólo 12 habitantes y que una buena agencia de publicidad ha montado un web donde vende figuritas, alojamiento en dos casas rurales del pueblo y bueno, una idea magnífica.

….. pero, lo que no es tan magnífico es la “implementación”. Dejando aparte rollos de que para ver vídeo y blah blah blah, y si no que no entres… y que la accesibilidad y patatin patatan, me llamaba la atención la velocidad de carga, con lo que con analizador en ristre, me puse a ver el tema.

Pues tela marinera. El ISP debe estar frontándose las manos de la pasta que va a ganar,

The new specification known as Content Management Interoperability Services (CMIS) defines a platform and language independent means of accessing ECM repositories and will be submitted to OASIS for advancement through its rigorous standards development process.

As well as enabling communication between ECM systems, CMIS will also enable rich, content centric applications and mashups to be developed independent of the underlying storage repository. Veo este post en Techcrunch que viene a sostener otros posts anteriores mios sobre ciertos crawlers o servicios que abusan de los enlaces a terceros para obtener mejores page ranks, etc, que tiran webs o secan los mismos. En este caso se trata de Cuil, un buscador. El post es interesantísimo y cuenta lo que el administrador de sistemas ha tenido que hacer.

An anonymous tipster wrote to us this morning to tell us that Cuil, the ill-fated “Google Killer,” has unleashed its Twiceler indexing bot on websites across the globe and in the process, has brought many sites down.

“I don’t know what spawned it, but when Cuil attempts to index a site, it does so by completely hammering it with traffic,” the tipster wrote. “So much, that it completely brings the site down. We’re 24 hours into this “index” of the site, and I’ve had to restrict traffic to the site down to 2 packets per second, while discarding the rest, or otherwise it makes the site unusable.”

The Admin Zone forums are abuzz over Cuil’s overzealous method for indexing. Countless posters on the site have said that their websites have been brought down because of the Twiceler robot and one user said it “leeched enormous amounts of bandwidth — nearly 2GB this month until it was blocked. It visited nearly 70,000 times!”

Website owners are also saying that the way Cuil indexes sites isn’t scientific in any way and is actually quite “amateurish.” According to those who experienced the Twiceler onslaught, the bot seems to “randomly hit a site and continue to guess and generate pseudo-random URLs in an attempt to find pages that aren’t accessible by links. And by doing this, they completely bring a site down to where it’s not functional.”

Upset site owners contacted Cuil to see why Twiceler was hitting sites so often. James Akers, Cuil’s Operational Engineer responded to the issue by saying that “Twiceler is an experimental crawler that we are developing for our new search engine. It is important to us that it obey robots.txt, and that it not crawl sites that do not wish to be crawled. If you wish I will glad to add your site to our list of sites to exclude, but I need you to tell the site name to block as email return addresses frequently from the domains that wish to be blocked.”

Akers also claims that Cuil has seen a “number of crawlers” that pretend to be Twiceler, and site owners should consult the company’s IP addresses page to determine if it’s really Cuil causing all the trouble.

Cuil has yet to respond to a request for comment, but it doesn’t look like the pelting of sites by the company’s Twiceler bot is an isolated incident. And if it’s true that Twiceler is trying to find pages on sites that don’t even exist to simply increase the index size, Cuil should work quickly to modify the bot before it receives even more negative publicity.
